The National Weather Service notes that Colorado hailstones range from roughly three-eighths of an inch to softball size near four and a half inches, and that the NWS issues severe thunderstorm warnings for hail one inch in diameter or larger because stones that size damage buildings. One inch is where roofs start taking real harm.
But a one-inch stone usually does not punch through a shingle. It bruises it. The impact fractures the fiberglass mat beneath the surface and knocks granules loose, neither of which is visible from the ground. The shingle is compromised but still sheds water, so the roof passes a casual look and the homeowner concludes nothing happened.
